Nasolabial Folds can also be know as nose to mouth lines, laughter lines, or smile lines. Age, exposure to the sun and smoking can deepen these lines as well as the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen and elastin are the two things that keep the area smooth and supported, a lack of this can cause nasolabial folds. A heavy cheek/ upper face area can also cause these lines to be deeper as the mid face requires more support.
Filler is injected into the piriform fossa to support the area and add volume that is necessary to fill the hollowness making the lines less prominent. Sometimes cheek filler (this is a separate treatment) can be required to add support to the mid face which in turn improves the appearance of the nasolabial folds.
